Dorset is now recognised by England Squash as being one of the most proactive Counties regarding Refereeing, being in the top 3 Counties based on the number of qualified Referees. This is being led by the enthusiasm and effort put in by David Williams, who is the Dorset Squash Refereeing Representative and Referee Assessor, and Gary Batchelor who is an England Squash Instructor.
The current rules can be found at the World Squash Federation website:-

Route to Qualification & Gradings Conferred in England by England Squash
- PROVISIONAL AWARD (P): Previously called “Club”, the name has been changed to avoid confusion with ‘C’ County Grade. Whilst this is not a recognised England Squash refereeing qualification, Counties are encouraged to promote this award for referees to officiate in local leagues to a minimum recognised standard. The minimum standard is attendance at a Referees Lecture and passing the England Squash written examination, both conducted by an England Squash Instructor. While it is not a recognised England Squash qualification, membership of England Squash is not a requirement. (Candidates wishing to upgrade their Provisional Award to County Grade should not be expected to sit the exam again. They would need to be members of England Squash and achieve the necessary assessments.)
- COUNTY GRADE (C): Referees who are able to control the earlier rounds of County Closed events and all local and Inter Club events.
- TOURNAMENT GRADE (T): Referees who are able to control the earlier rounds of major championships such as National Closed and Open Championships, the final rounds of County Closed events, Inter County matches and later rounds of local Open events.
- NATIONAL GRADE (N): Referees who are able to control matches of an International standard, such as the final rounds of major championships like National Closed and Open Championships, the finals of County Closed and local Closed and Open events. Their ability to carry out these duties at major venues before large audiences is an overriding requirement
