2009 Dorset Closed Squash Championships
Many of Dorsets's leading Squash players competed in the Dorset Closed Squash Championships held at Bournemouth Squash Club over the weekend of 3rd and 4th October. Bournemouth Squash Club sponsored this event.
The tournament is restricted to players affiliated to squash clubs in Dorset. In addition to the men's and women's main events, it featured masters event's in age group categories over 35, over 45 and over 55.
Following an impressive display of squash, Clive Ewins (Ferndown) beat Andy Corben (West Hants) 11/9, 11/9, 9/11, 11/2 in the final of the main to lift the title for a record 13th year in succession. Clive and Andy have competed in this final for the past 3 years, with Clive prevailing every time. This title has now been held by just two men for an incredible 23 years. Martin Greenslade having previously held this title for 10 years.
In the ladies final, Gemma Barber (Bournemouth Sports Club) met Alex Boeg (Ferndown). The early stages of the first two games were quite even. But a number of mistakes by Alex at critical stages of the game saw Gemma take the first two games 11/9 and 11/7. In the third game, Alex came out fighting and the game went to the wire with Gemma taking the final game 14/12.
This was the first time the over 35's category was held in this competition. Lee Keeley (Bournemouth Squash Club) was a deserved winner over Ian Miles (Blandford), taking the match 11/4, 11/6, 11/2.
The over 45's event saw Martin Greenslade (BSC) come up against Charlie Campbell (BSC). Charlie was first out of the blocks, surprising Martin and taking the first game 6/11. By the second game, Martin found his old magical touch, and with some excellent stroke play, took the next three games easily, 11/3, 11/1, 11/5.
Roy Widdowson (BSC) met his team mate Pete Smith in the final of the over 55's. Due to the vagaries of the draw, Roy had played his semi final round the previous day, but Pete played his semi final round less than three hours before the final, and was therefore tired. Roy easily prevailed 11/3, 11/5 11/8.
Chairman of Dorset Squash, David Williams presented all the prizes to winners and runners up. He also presented the Basil Hebden trophy to Julie and Martin for their services to squash in Dorset.
