Dorset County Closed squash competition 2018/19 – Report and results

Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre (2RM) was delighted at being selected to hold the 2018/19 Dorset County Closed Squash competition on Thursday 1st to Saturday 3rd November 2018.

It was the intention of both Charlie & Myself to try and return squash to the ‘good old days’ of past events at 2RM (some of you are old enough to remember the Bill & Ashley days?) by trying to get everyone involved in what should be a celebration of all that Dorset Squash has to offer.

Starting the event on Thursday evening and finishing by 5pm on the Saturday proved very popular, especially the free raffle and buffet open to all after the formalities were complete.

41 entrants and a total of 84 matches resulted in the following champions:

The A section was split into two boxes of 4 with the box winners playing off to decide the champion.

Box A was won by Clive Ewins (West Hants) despite a spirited effort by home player Marc James (2RM), losing out 3-1 in the box decider whereas box B was won by the up and coming Phil Sargeant (West Hants) with a great win over Dorset Squash stalwart Andy Corben (West Hants) in their box decider.

Clive proved too strong for Phil in the final, running out winner 3-0 but I am sure in the coming years the up and coming youngsters will be pushing Clive hard to wrestle the title out of his firm grip.

The Ladies section was limited to 4 entrants with reigning champion Gemma Barber (Bournemouth Sports) and Amy Campbell-Wynter (2RM) being the strongest pair. They fought out a tremendous battle in their box game, Gemma winning 11-9 in the 5th which due to Amy injuring herself in her last box game meant that the box game had to stand in lieu of a final showdown, well done Gemma on retaining your title.

The Over 55’s was a little thin on the ground, and in the hair department but it was Bournemouth Sports Richard Harrison that came out champion beating Phil James (2RM) 3-0 in the final.

The Men’s B section was a traditional draw of 16.

Plate champion was home coach and squash enthusiast Charlie Campbell-Wynter winning a spirited final against Stuart Belbin (Milford) 3-1.

The B cup final was an all home affair with experience vs youth, Nick Jenkins taking on Luca Campbell-Wynter. It was a close fought battle with Luca showing his new-found composure to win the 5th game 11-9, you will see from the picture that he even managed a smile.

The C section, a box of 6 players with the top two playing a final meant the finalist had to play a total of six, best of five set matches over the three days. The final was between Noah Campbell-Wynter (2RM) and Ashley Russell (Milford) with Noah reversing the result in the box game coming out champion with a 3-2 win, well done Noah.

Following the presentation, a free raffle and buffet was held for all entrants that stayed. This proved to be a massive success and received some very positive feedback from those present.

I would like to thank all those that entered the event, the support from the committee and the Leisure Centre and hope that we have put 2RM back on the map in Dorset Squash.

Nick Jenkins
